Despite its seeming simplicity and abstractness in modern-day mathematics, its extensive and fascinating history proves otherwise.

Origins in Ancient Civilizations

Throughout human history, the idea of zero didn’t simply appear out of nowhere. It gradually evolved, as our understanding of advanced numerical systems improved. Even ancient civilisations such as the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Mayans had impressive mathematical systems in place, but they lacked the concept of zero as a dedicated symbol or image. While their accomplishments were noteworthy, the absence of zero as a distinct entity limited their ability to perform complex mathematical calculations and operations.

Egyptian Numerals

The ancient Egyptian numeral system was a base-10 system, similar to our modern decimal system. In a base-10 system, each digit’s value is determined by its position within the number, with the rightmost digit having a value of 1, the next digit to the left having a value of 10, the next digit having a value of 100, and so on, with each position increasing by a power of 10.

They used hieroglyphic symbols to represent the powers of 10. For example, a single vertical stroke represented the number one, two strokes represented two, and so on up to nine. To represent tens, they used a coiled rope symbol. They used a lotus plant symbol to denote hundreds and a kneeling man symbol to represent thousands. These symbols were repeated to indicate multiples of ten, hundred, or thousand.

The Egyptians combined the symbols for different powers of 10 for larger numbers. For example, to represent the number 43, they would combine the symbol for 40 (four tens) with the symbol for 3.

In the Egyptian numeral system, a blank space was used as a placeholder to indicate zero implicitly within a number. For example, if the number 407 was to be represented, the Egyptians would write it as the symbol for 400, followed by a blank space, then the symbol for 7. The blank space served as an indicator of zero in that position.

Babylonian Numerals

The Babylonians, who inhabited Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 2000 BCE, developed a numerical system based on cuneiform script. The ancient Mayan civilisation — the pre-Columbian era, the Maya civilisation in Mesoamerica (present-day Mexico and Central America), known for their advanced understanding of mathematics and astronomy, had a unique numeral system that included a representation for zero. The Mayans contributed significantly to the development of zero as a numerical concept. Let’s explore Mayan numerals and their use of zero.

The Mayan numeral system was vigesimal, based on the number 20. They had a combination of symbols to represent numbers, utilising a mix of bars and dots. The key features of Mayan numerals include:

  1. Base-20 System: The Mayans used a base-20 system, where each position represented a power of 20. They had separate symbols for numbers from 0 to 19.
  2. Symbol for Zero: One distinct feature of Mayan numerals is the presence of a dedicated symbol for zero. The Mayans used a shell-shaped symbol to represent zero. This symbol was distinct from those used for the numbers 1 to 19.
  3. Place Value Notation: Similar to other numeral systems, the Mayan system employed place value notation. The value of a digit depended on its position within the number. Each position had a specific symbol to represent the value.
  4. Vertical and Horizontal Bars: The Mayan symbols for numbers 1 to 4 consisted of vertical bars. For numbers 5 and its multiples, they used horizontal bars. Dots were used to represent numbers from 0 to 4.
